Grooming

Grooming your Barbet depending on if your dog is a show dog or a working dog or a family pet, will determine the length of the coat. We do NOT reccomend shaving a Barbet EVER if at all possible. The Barbet is a natural, rustic breed.

Below is helpful grooming advice for the show coat on a Barbet from a fellow Barbet breeder in the Netherlands. Thank you Greet!!

Notes on Barbet Grooming

Firstly, if your dog is a confirmation show dog, the hair will have to be a minimum of 11cm/4 inches, a working dog (doing trials/certifications and hunting, etc) will, out of necessity, be shorter likely 6cm/2 inches. The family pet Barbet may be presented as the owner finds most adaptable to their lifestyle, however, is still a marvelous dog and should be treated with the same care and concern as a show dog. Good regular grooming will only maintain a healthy coat and excellent appearance.

The Barbet is a COATED dog. This means, that is should have hair covering it’s body. Do NOT shave your Barbet down to the skin, not only is it unhealthy for the dog, but also it gives the dog a completely different appearance!!! If you want a short haired dog, buy a lab!
